A Family Afternoon at the Marbling Tray

They arrived a little early, which the host said was fine. The tray was already set up when they walked in — shallow and wide, filled with water that caught the afternoon light coming through the studio window.

The host handed each of them a dropper and a small pot of ink. The younger child went straight for teal; the older one spent a minute deciding before choosing red. Their mother watched the first drop hit the water and spread out in a slow, perfect circle and said, quietly, that she was glad they had come.

An hour later they left with four framed prints and paint on their hands. The kids fought over who got the teal one in the car.
